Jampol 4th in Vineyard Jaunt

On vacation, Noah Jampol took time out of his training to run in the "Vineyard Scoops" 5K Tour of Edgartown on Martha;s Vineyard, Saturday. Noah's time of 18:42 for 4th place indicates that

a) he was running a tempo run, or some other training effort;
b) he was sensibly holding back in the extreme heat;
c) the course was long;
d) the course was ok, but Noah got lost and ran an extra quarter mile; or
e) he enjoyed the sponsor's ice cream BEFORE the race

in any case, he finished right behind (well, 27 seconds behind) my friend and soon-to-be teaching colleague, Mark Engerman.

We are still awaiting Noah's race report.

Well I ran a 9 miler late last night, which was OK, but my legs are starting to feel weary from too much pavement and no one to run with(race was pavement unfortunately). It's been bad recently because it's not a sleep/nutrition problem because I feel very good health-wise just my legs feel like they'll crumble when I run. Race was at 9 AM, so that was rough. Anyhow, I woke up and my left calf was bothering me because it was tight and gave a twinge whenever I stepped(first calf problem ever). My plan all along was to tempo this. I warmed up and my calf started to feel better thankfully, and wasn't a problem in the race. I went too fast the first mile 5:30ish, a little too slow the second mile 6:00ish. Jon, your future colleague buzzed by me with 1.5 to go or so and he must've gone out at the correct pace cuz he flew past me. Anyhow, I was running alone, and my legs were feeling tired and I guess I stopped running very hard. This is probably my first ever 5K road race where I neither considered stopping to walk, nor asked myself why I was doing it. Must've been mailing it in subconsciously. Third mile was a crawl and my legs didn't feel good. Breathing was very good. It was a bit hot, which could've had something to do with the slowdown. Legs just kinda felt flat, and I think I need to replace my pair of lightweight trainers(just ordered new pair). Calf was back to bothering me a couple hours later, and now my right hip of all places is hurting too. Definitely taking tomorrow off. Hopefully everything will right itself soon.

Dude, back off the mileage. Going into a cross season with good health is just as important, if not more so, than going into one in good shape. I'd hate for you to miss our little showdown at VCP because you stuck too closely to your mileage plan. Feel better, man.

Hey Noah, I agree with Dan.

Time to take it easy for a bit and let the energy return to your running. Letting your legs recover will only help you in the fall.

Thanks for the advice and support guys. I took today off, and the hip and calf are already back to normal. I'll see how I feel tomorrow. I think I just really needed a day off. My legs never really got up to snuff after my last tempo about 10 days ago.

Train like me...

Unfortunately, I've had to do the "polgar" training method this week due to the bothersome hip. I have done biking as cross training. Today I don't feel anything in my hip, so I'm hoping that I'll be good for a run.
