Newton Upends Needham, Walpole

In their first home race of the year over the familiar Cold Spring Park course, Newton North's boys and girls remained unbeaten on the season, recording double sweeps against Needham and Walpole, Wednesday.

For the boys, it was an early test against a Needham team that had beaten them each of the last two years. With Needham out of the way, it was hard not to look ahead towards the end of the season and the prospect of unbeaten Newton North facing unbeaten Brookline for the league title.

But that day is six weeks off.

In the meantime, Dan Hamilton and Jarad Forman went 1-2 on the Rockets and Rebels, with Hamilton leading the way in a Cold Spring PR 16:48, and Forman not far behind in 16:56. Needham's Jake Newfield and Dan Shields finished 3-4, and followed by Newton's Mike Goldenberg (17:06 - PR) and Ezra Lichtman (17:19 - PR), clinching the meet. Sophomore Dan Ranti (17:36), junior Mike Weinfeld (18:11), and junior Jake Gleason (18:27) rounded out the Tigers' top seven.

question: league champions = the team with the best record, or the team that wins BSC at houghtons?

League champs are team with best record - not winner of BSC champs meet at Houghton's.
Congrats to the Fighting Chameleons of CA for their double victory over the hallowed turf at Larz yesrday.

seems silly to use tons of dual meets to determine league champ team then, rather than one meet with all teams there. maybe just me.

I don't know man because it seems silly to have a ton of meets that don't determine anything really? It's weird having dual meet AFTER the league meet, though. Great job by North, this team is probably the strongest since the banner 2004 squad.

Thanks Bombay!

Thanks, Mike! You can be sure CA applied the lessons their coach learned the hard way watching teams race at Larz for several years.

As for league title, for reference, the EIL voted this year to base league champ on the end-of-season league meet. I think that's ok. The big worry was that teams wouldn't take dual meets seriously, but I see no evidence of that happening.

Noah - I ran a good tempo run this evening and thought about that tempo we did at the reservoir when I could still keep up with you... mostly.

Hey Jon, don't sell yourself short, you stayed the whole way. I've had some good tempos since coming back to school. Did a 30 minute one on Saturday- ouch! too long for a tempo though the pace felt right.
