NNHS Alumni Results - 12/5/09

Indoor track meets began in Boston, and a few hours later the snow arrived. Coincidence?

In any case, there were some familiar names in the results of the Jay Carisella T&F Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center, Saturday. I counted six NNHS alumni running, jumping, or throwing.

Let's start with Jess Barton. The Northeastern sophomore transfer finished 5th in the 3000, running 10:15.75.

In the men's 1000m, Northeastern's Seb Putzeys looked in fine form, taking 2nd in 2:34.10.

BU Freshman Sam Arsenault ran 8.03 in the prelims and 7.97 in the finals of the 55 hurdles to place 3rd in that event. Arsenault also cleared 6-4 in the high jump to take 5th.

Hymlaire Lamisere (UMass Dartmouth) and Ivan Kostadinov (unattached) were separated by only a quarter inch in the long jump, as Hymlaire jumped 20-00.05 and Ivan was 20-00.25.

Finally, Bentley sophomore Steven Long recorded a throw of 13.23 (43-05) to place 13th in the shot put.

Mayor's Cup -- An Appreciation

Yes, Mr. Mayor, I have heard about the Boston Athletic Association and the marathon footrace they have been putting on -- quaintly -- on Patriots Day Monday most every year since 1897.

And yes, I have heard that this same venerable organization organizes a half-marathon in early October, and that it is so popular that entries close within 24 hours of registration opening.

Meaning no disrespect to these races, I urge you not to overlook the third jewel in BAA's crown, your own Mayor's Cup, a unique annual celebration of youth, recreational, club, and professional cross-country racing held in the heart of the city. Other cities put on big marathons -- it's big business and good for tourism -- but what other city has something like the Mayor's Cup?

Yesterday, Franklin Park was a ablaze with fall color, as local boy Sean Quigley, a former state champion from Archbishop Williams H.S. in Braintree, won the closest finish in the 20-year history of the Men's 8k race, taking the lead for the first time in the final strides of the race and outleaning last year's winner Jacob Korir.

It was eerily familiar, as I can remember Quigley running neck-and-neck in the final strides with Andy Pitts in the 2002 state championships.

Two other local guys finished in the top ten: Doherty H.S. and Boston College alum Tim Ritchie ran 24:02 for 4th, and O'Bryant and UMass Lowell grad Ruben Sanca ran 24:23 for 7th. Amazing to see former Footlocker champ and Wisconsin product Matt Withrow jogging around after his 9th place finish.

Local club New Balance Boston won both the men's (8K) and women's (5K) team titles.

In the Franklin Park 5K, I scoured the results for NNHS alumni and found one: Charlie Krasnow, NNHS '07, ran 18:17. Arlington's Antony Taylor, a contender for the Mass H.S. state championship, won the race in 16:04.

After the races, I ran into dozens of people I knew, including Brookline Coach Mike Glennon who was there with a volunteer crew.

Complete results of all the races can be found on Cool Running.

DRobb at BAA Half

Dan Robb (NNHS Class of '02) used to run a mean half for Newton North, the "half" being the half-mile, of course. These days Dan, who looks like he could still run 2:00 for 800m, is happier running longer distances, and on Sunday he made his half-marathon debut, running 1:27:19 at the BAA Half-Marathon in Boston. Congratulations, Dan!

NNHS Alumni Results - 4/11/09

It was wet and windy for the Solomon Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University in Dedham on Saturday. The rain didn't slow down Jess Barton, who ran a very nice 4:40.61 to place 3rd in the 1500m. Also runnng the metric mile, Seb Putzeys placed 5th in 4:13.45. Official old guy Dave Cahill placed 5th in the 400m, runnig 53.32.

Bates was in action against Colby, MIT, and USM, and Doug Brecher was also running a "speed event" for him, as he placed 7th in the 1500m in 4:12.37. Ben Chebot ran the 5000m and finished in 16:54.59.

On Friday, April 10th, Harvard and Yale joined forces to compete against Cambridge and Oxford in a meet hosted by Yale. David Smith placed 6th in the discus with a throw of 39.72 (130-4)and had the third best throw of the day in the shot with a put of 14.54 (47-8.5).

NNHS Alumni Results - 4/04/09

The first weekend of April brought blustery conditions to Fitchburg, where several NNHS alumni competed at the Jim Sheehan Memorial meet, hosted by Fitchburg State College.

UMass-Dartmouth freshman Hymlaire Lamisere was busy, competing in three events. He finished 8th in the 200m in 24.70, 11th in the 100m in 12.05, and 11th in the long jump with a leap of 19-8.75.

Bates College was also in in attendance and it was good to see Ben Chebot back on the track. Ben ran 17:13.06 for 5K in what I think is his first race in a while. Doug Brecher ran the 1500m and finished 10th in 4:18.88.

GBTC's Dave Cahill ran the 400m, finishing 10th in 52.61.

BU at Florida Relays

At the Florida Relays, Dave Polgar competed in the 1500, running 4:03.45 (roughly a 4:20-4:21 mile).

Wesleyan at Coast Guard Invitational

Wesleyan senior Scott Cole set a 1500 PR, running 4:16.06 to finish 11th at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday.

Jampol Makes All-Conference Academic Honor Roll

On Friday, Johns Hopkins junior Noah Jampol was named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for the winter season. To be eligible, student athletes must achieve a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher and be "starters or significant reserves" on their athletic teams. Jampol was one of JHU's top milers, running 4:29 for the Blue Jays this winter.

NNHS Alumni Results - 3/21/09

I couldn't quite wrap my mind around the fact that there was an outdoor track meet in the Boston area this weekend, but the results are posted, so it must have happened: on the first full day of spring, Northeastern hosted the Husky Spring Open at their track in Dedham.

It was great to see the return of Northeastern sophomore Jess Barton after she sat out the winter season to let an injury heal. Jess won the women's 5000m yesterday with a time of 17:48.64, over a minute ahead of 2nd place.

Also competing in the 5000 (somewhat surprisingly so, since he usually focuses on the 1000/mile) was Seb Putzeys, who ran a more-than-respectable 15:26.84 (definitely a personal best at that distance) for 4th place.

Now this is not a recent result, but I am delighted to report that Ciaran O'Donovan (NNHS '03) is back running again, and completed the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon in San Francisco on Feb 1, 2009, running 1:39:10.

NNHS Alumni Results - 2/27-2/28

Some of the usual suspects were in action this weekend as the indoor season heads into its final weeks.

Boston University hosted the New England College Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday, with several NNHS alumni competing. Wheaton's Cailean Robinson continued his outstanding indoor season, running 6.44 to place 5th in the 55 dash. In the mile, David Polgar ran 4:16.18, which is -- if I'm not mistaken -- his lifetime best.

In the 5000 it was another battle between Doug Brecher and Brookline alum Mike Burnstein. Doug ran 15:15.57, which is not bad, but Mike ran a personal best 14:53, which is tremendous!

I didn't see Seb Putzeys' name in any individual results, but his name does appear as the third leg (800m) on Northeastern's distance medley team, which ran 10:30.93.

Dan Chebot pulled off an impressive double at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Championships , hosted Friday and Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology. Dan finished second overall in the 5000m with a time of 15:17.24, and fifth in the 3000m, running 8:50.12. Dan has qualified for the ECAC championships in both events.

NNHS Alumni Results - 2/21-22/09

America East Championships (at BU)

David Polgar ran a season's best (and close to a personal best) 4:17.48 in the mile at the America East Championships on Saturday, finishing 6th. David also led off the distance medley relay, which also finished 6th in 10:04.86.

NE Div III Championships (at MIT)

Doug Brecher placed 8th in the 3000m at the NE DIII Championships on Saturday, running 8:50.55, just a couple of seconds behind Brookline alum Mike Burnstein.

USATF-NE New England Championships (at Harvard)

Post-collegiate alumni Dave Cahill and Josh Seeherman competed at the New England Championships on Sunday. Dave ran 51.38 to place 3rd in the 400m. Josh ran 2:02.90 to place 16th in the 800.

For Bay State League fans, Framingham alumnus Jordan Maddocks (now attending Brown), won the high jump with a leap of 2.04 (6-8.25).

NNHS Alumni Results - 1/23-24/09

The Boston University Terrier Classic took place this weekend, and as usual produced some outstanding performances.

In the 55 dash, Cailean Robinson (Wheaton College) blazed a personal best 6.50 in his qualifying heat, and then ran 6.59 to finish 7th in the finals. NNHS alum and historian extraordinaire Josh Seeherman (GBTC) ran 2:01.75 in the 800. Teammate Dave Cahill ran 51.05 in the 400, a time that might have won the event at the BU mini-meet, but placed him 38th here.

In the throws, David Smith put the shot 13.52m (44-04.25) , and threw the weight 14.18m (46-06.25), which is (I think) a personal best in that event.

On Saturday, Brandeis hosted the 2009 Reggie Poyau Invitational in Waltham, and in the 3000m, Doug Brecher ran a season's best 8:58.12 to finish 7th. He then doubled back to anchor (yes, anchor!) the Bates 4x800 team, which ran 8:33.52. In that same meet Newton South alum Sam Donovan had quite a day, winning the mile in a PR 4:22.49 with a dramatic kick, and then anchoring the winning 4x800 team.

At the St. Lawrence Invitational Saturday, Dan Chebot dropped down from his usual 3k/5k races to run the 1000, finishing 7th in 2:42.39. Dan also ran the 1600 for Rochester in the DMR (11:02).

At Wesleyan's Cardinal Invitational (I) this weekend, Scott Cole ran the mile, finishing in 4:41.78.

Seb Putzeys ran 1:59.91 for the 800 on Friday, as Northeastern competed in the Great Dane Classic at the NYC Armory.

NNHS Alumni Results - Jan 17/18, 2009

Yale competed against Dartmouth and Columbia on Sunday, and David Smith (NNHS '07, Yale ) had a big day in the throws. Smith tossed the weight 13.79 meters, and threw the shot 15.13 (49-7.5) for second place. I believe those are both collegiate personal bests.

By the way, Brookline's Matt Stewart ran 2:29.39 for 1000m at the Yale meet, which is, I believe the first time he has been under 2:30.00 for that distance.

Another former NNHS shot putter was in action on Sunday, as Steve Long (NNHS '08, Bentley '12) threw the shot 12.13 at the Greater Boston Meet at Harvard's Gordon Track. Also at the GBTC meet, John Blouin ran 9:16.39 for 3K.

On Saturday, Doug Brecher (Bates '10) competed in a tri-meet among Bates, Colby, and MIT in Lewiston, ME. Doug ran 9:09.42 for 3K and 4:35.49 for 1 mile. Solid times for a flat track.

Wesleyan University was in in action on Saturday, and Scott Cole ran 2:45.78 for 1000m to place 7th in that race.

Dan Chebot (Rochester '09) competed at the RIT Invitational, doing a speed double. Dan ran 2:48.42 for the 1000 (everyone doing the 1000 all of a sudden), and 4:41.90 for the mile.

On Thursday night, David Polgar (BU '10) competed in a meet against Sacred Heart at BU, running 4:28.46 for the mile.

Newton's Best Long Jumpers?

Earlier this year, NNHS historian Josh Seeherman spent time in the Boston Public Library researching old Massachusetts scholastic track and field results. Among other finds, he discovered results dating back to the 1930's for two athletes who might still be the top two long jumpers in Newton history: Stanley Johnson and Milton Green.

Stanley Johnson was the 1932 Class A Champion in the long jump for Newton
High (No Newton North and Newton South in those days!), and was part of the 1931 team that won the Class A Championship. Johnson went on to attend MIT, in part supported by a scholarship grant from the Newton Centre Rotary Club.

At MIT, Johnson jumped 24-2, which is STILL the MIT long jump record. This summer, the MIT athletics web site published a story on Johnson, who is alive and well at 94, and on the quest by current MIT athlete Stephen Morgan to break the 72-year-old school record.

72 Years in the Making

Milton Green was a teammate of Stanley Johnson's at Newton High, and went on to Harvard where he jumped 24-11 in 1936. Josh thinks this is probably the Newton native all-comers record. Can anyone think of another athlete who jumped farther?

I should mention that Green was primarily a hurdler, in fact one of the best

Milton Green, who had the world record in the indoor hurdles and was one of
the best hurdlers in the world while at Harvard. He earned a berth in the 1936 Olympic Trials but declined it as a protest of the Nazi regime (Green was Jewish).

According to Josh, Green was born in Lowell, but ran for Newton High, where in 1931, he won the 120 Yard Low Hurdles in the Class A Championships in a meet record 14.4.

NNHS Alumni at BU Mini-Meet (12/27/08)

More fast times at BU, as NNHS alumni and others shook off their post-Christmas, post-snowstorm blues, and ripped off some solid early season races.

I never seem to give the sprinters enough credit, so let's start with Cailean Robinson, who posted a 22.66 in the 200m, the 7th fastest time overall. Cailean said he thought about entering the 400m... he said his coach at Wheaton wants him to run on the 4x400 relay... but, well, when you're a 55m/60m kind of guy, the 400 always seems like an awfully long way.

Noah Jampol did his annual 3000/1M double, running a controlled 9:45 in his trainers, and coming back to run a controlled 4:40 in his spikes. In the same heat with Noah was Josh Seeherman, who ran 4:44.41.

It was good to see Brookline alum Robert Gibson, who looked very strong and seems to have recovered from a bout of mono he suffered this fall. At BU, he doubled in the 1M/800m, taking 2nd in the 1M in 4:18.11, and 3rd in the 800 in 1:59.16. Not bad for December with no speedwork yet.

It was also great to see Dan Robb (NNHS Class of 2002), who returned recently from two years teaching at a school in Tacna, Peru. Dan was there to watch a former Providence College teammate, but he (Dan) looked fit, and I could imagine him coming down out of the stands, borrowing a pair of spike, and dropping a 2:00 flat, just like old times.

NNHS Alumni at BU Mini-Meet (12/20/08)

As the snow continued to fall from the tail end of Boston's first big snowstorm of the winter, there were some good early season races from NNHS alumni at the first BU mini-meet of the season. Many runners use these meets as fast workouts, running multiple events for strength and tuning.

Dave Cahill had himself a very nice sprint double, winning the 400m outright in 50.80, and coming back to run 23.80 in the 200m.

John Blouin ran the mile, finishing 4th in the 3rd heat with a time of 4:42.20.

I could swear that Josh Seeherman ran the mile, too, although I don't see his name in the results. In any case, he ran the 800, clocking 2:07.90.

Also good to see several NSRP folks, including Mike Burnstein and Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot getting some speedwork in by running the 800, and James Vance, who PR'd in the mile, running 4:34.70 in what he said was his first mile race since high school.

NNHS Alumni Results - Husky Winter Carnival

On Saturday, local collegiate and open competition moved indoors with the Husky Winter Carnival at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury. Several generations of NNHS alumni were represented in the results.

Starting with the field events (for once), Bentley freshman Steve Long put the shot 13.11m (43-00.25) to place 14th in his first collegiate meet.

In the mile, Seb Putzeys ran 4:26.05 to place 11th. After a full season of XC running 8Ks, do you think Seb is looking forward to the shorter races indoors?

Dave Cahill (Greater Boston TC) jumped into the 500 and placed 9th in 1:07.30.

In the women's 3000m, Jess Barton placed 3rd in 10:18.21.

But to me, the most significant result of the day was to see that Harvard won the 4x400 relay in 3:19.30, with senior Jon Wofsy running anchor. While at Newton North, Wofsy was one of the most exciting, most reliable anchors the school ever had. At Harvard, he has had to deal with various injuries, including a stress fracture of the femur. It is great to see him running well, and we wish him good health and the best of luck this season.

Chebot Family Results

Dan Chebot writes:

"All five of us ran the Boston Volvo 5k for MS [on Thanksgiving Day]. I got 5th in 15:56... Ben got 9th in 17:22, Jesse got 31st in 19:10, my dad got 131st in 24:02 and my mom finished 396th in 28:22. It was a lot of fun for all of us and hopefully my parents are now hooked."

Dan's fifth place came against stiff competition (there are no easy races on Thanksgiving!), and he was only 16 seconds behind the winner. Ben won his age group. It's amazing that Jesse ran just over 19 minutes, since most of his training is probably on the bike. As for Alan and Terri -- I'm delighted to be able to post the results from their first (?) road race. The Chebots have always been great supporters of this blog and Newton North track and XC. Congratulations on your run, and on fielding a complete five-person team!

(And let me know when you want to start those track workouts...)

In the men's race, Trinity freshman Mike Burnstein (Brookline '08) finished 13th overall, running 26:35. Bates junior Doug Brecher (NNHS '06) finished 36th in 27:09. Westfield State's Philip Gingras (Walpole '05) finished 98th in 28:23. Tufts sophomore Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot (Brookline '07) finished 120th in 28:36. UMass Boston's Ryan Norton (Walpole '05) and Craig Myers (Weymouth '08) finished in 33:09 and 34:46, respectively.

In the D3 Atlantic Regional held at St. Lawrence University, Rochester senior Dan Chebot (NNHS '05) finished 74th in 27:36.

My apologies if I missed anyone.

Jamie Krieder: 2:56:03 at Cape Cod Marathon

Newton North alum and great friend of NSRP, Jamie Krieder, finished 14th in the Falmouth Cape Cod Marathon last Sunday, running 2:56:03 (6:43 per mile). Jamie was also first master (40-49).

Congratulations, Jamie!

The race was won by Newton South and BU grad Mike Fisher (below), who ran 2:33:12 (5:51 pace).

(Thanks to Josh Seeherman for pointing me to the results.)

NNHS Alumni Results - Nov 1, 2008

This was the weekend for conference meets, ad we have results from a few of them:

At the NESCAC championships in Lewiston, Maine, Doug Brecher and Ben Chebot represented host Bates College in the men's 8K. Brecher finished 30th in 26:50, while Chebot finished 111th in 29:19. Other friends and notables in the race included Trinity freshman Mike Burnstein (21st, 26:30) and Tufts sophomore Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot (51st, 27:17). In the women's 6K, Wesleyan senior Anna Schindler finished 64th in 24:24. Middlebury senior and former Wellesley star Alexandra Krieg (Peter's sister!) finished 3rd overall in 22:25.

At the UAA Championships, hosted by Emory University, Dan Chebot placed 46th (5th man for Rochester) in 27:23.

Boston University competed at the America East Championship in Maryland. David Polgar finished 27th overall, fourth for his team, running 26:48 for 8K. BU was led by none other than freshman Elliot Lehane (Brookline '08), who finished 20th in 26:32. Lehane's teammate at Brookline and now teammate at BU, Chris Mercurio, finished in 57th place in 28:15.

Northeastern competed at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Centreville Virginia, Saturday. In the women's 6K, Jess Barton finished 21st overall, 3rd for the Huskies, in 22:19. For the men, Seb Putzeys finished 39th overall, 2nd for the Huskies with a time of 26:24. (By the way, Northeastern XC Coach Renny Waldron is no relation of mine).

NNHS/BayState Athletes at NE Championships

The women's 5K varsity race at the Collegiate New England Championships yesterday looked like a Bay State reunion there for a moment. Wellesley's Brielle Chabot (17:56) and Alexandra Krieg (18:02) finished 5th and 7th, respectively, while Newton North's Jess Barton was 18th in 18:25, a Franklin Park PR. Other Bay Staters included Natick's Anya Price (Tufts '12) in 19:47, and North's Anna Schindler (Wesleyan '09) in 20:11. There might have been others in the 300-person field, but if so, I missed 'em.

In the men's varsity 8K race, Dedham's Rex Radloff (UMass Lowell) placed 3rd in 24:43, ten seconds ahead of former Brockton standout Kevin Gill. Brookline's Elliot Lehane (Boston University) finished 44th (25:33), ahead of former rival, current teammate David Polgar (PR 25:49). Although I watched the entire race, I never saw David. At one point, I even joked to Colin McArdle that if David was in the race, I would certainly see him because he's so hard to miss. Well, apparently married life has not only improved his times, but given him the power of invisibility.

Moving right along, Seb Putzeys (Newton North '08, Northeastern '12) ran 26:34, ten seconds ahead of Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot (Brookline '07, Tufts '11). Former Braintree speedsters Kyle Higgins and Chris O'Day, represented Assumption, running 27:32 and 27:40, respectively. Ben Chebot (Newton North '08, Bates '12) ran 28:43.

In the men's sub-varsity race, Wesleyan's Scott Cole (Newton North '05) continued his efforts to rebound from injury, running 33:17.

If I missed anyone, let me know.

NNHS Alumni in action this weekend

This weekend was the first weekend of racing for many college XC teams, and it was exciting to see the names of NNHS alumni in the results.

Dan Chebot '05 (Univ. of Rochester) ran 27:49 for 8K to finish 8th in a tri-meet against RIT and SUNY-Fredonia in upstate NY action. results

Evan Morse '05 (Wheaton College) ran 30:05 for 8K at the Wheaton Invitational for 31st overall and 3rd best for his team. results

Joni Waldron '02 (Earlham College) ran 21:38 for 5K at the GLCA Championship meet at Albion, MI. results

Ciaran O'Donovan '03 (Tufts Univ.) ran 29:35 for 8K at the Connecticut College Cross Country Invitational. results

Still to see action: Liz Gleason '06 (Williams), Brittany Morse '04 and Anna Schindler '05 (Wesleyan), Clayton Lloyd '05 (Brandeis), Chris Barnicle '05 (Arkansas). We're also trying to track down Pat Pierce '04 (Bowdoin) and Tim Killilea '03 (NE College) whose teams ran on Saturday. We hope they're ok and not injured.
