NNHS Alumni Results - 7/28/09

Dan Chebot sampled the rich experience of a New England summer road race last night, finishing 3rd (out of 1500 runners) at the Yankee Homecoming 5K in Newburyport. Dan was credited with a 16:00 (after a 4:48 opening mile), but claims that his time was just a shade over 15:58. No FAT up here in Newburyport, Dan.

Actually, the 5K is the salad course for the evening. The main course is the 10-Miler, which offers big bucks and annually attracts a deep field. Friend of NSRP Ruben Sanca finished a strong 3rd in the 10-Miler in 51:30. This correspondent managed to mop up the competition in the senior citizen division.

In parts of the world where birth certificates are sketchy at best, athletes often lie about their ages so they can run in junior competitions despite being several years older than their opponents. After this race, I have decided that I am going to figure out some way to add 5 years to my legal age in the next 13 years, so when I'm 35 I can claim 40. This will allow me to collect $200 checks essentially at will like you and Terry did last night, except it will be even easier for me because I'll still be pretty young.

I think that this logic is pretty sound.

200 big ones? Seriously? That's a good day of work. Way to go Jon and Terry. Should be awesome to one day run on the master's circuit even if money like that is rare.

As my dad the musician used to say, "Keep the day job!"

But seriously, when you find yourself looking forward to all the easy money you're going to be winning into your golden years, be careful what you wish for. And just so you know, I'm planning on sticking around long enough to see what Dan, Doug, and all the rest of you guys are running for times when you're 51...

...Or 62. Please note that 62-year-old Larry Olsen ran 63:43, the age-graded equivalent of 50:23 -- which would have won the open race by over 40 seconds.

Sounds like Dan is issuing a challenge to the validity of Jon's birth certificate....really Jon, can anyone PROVE you're over 40?

Be a Master runner at the young age of 35! Dan this sounds like a bad infomercial.
On your way to being a 40+ runner you can look forward to lingering "injuries" that become your old frieds, a likely knee surgery (hopefully outpatient), some of your best running friends sidelined for good and the sight of your PR's vanishing in the rear view mirror. Oh, and the occasional semi-lucrative age group award that is quickly belittled by posers in the peanut gallery. Lets get this party started!
Embrace youth while it's still within arms reach.

Well said Terry. Congrats to you and Jon on your fine runs. Alwyas wanted to get up to Newburyport for the spectacle. Maybe next year.
