Some July 4th Race Results

Newton North Asst. Track and XC coach Shawn Wallace won the 40th annual Lynnfield Athletic Assn. 5K, running 16:57. Congratulations, Shawn!

At the Harvard 4th of July 5-Mile race, Doug Brecher placed 4th overall in 27:41 (5:33 pace) on a very rugged course.

A lot of current and former Bay State runners ran the Charles River YMCA 3M road race in Needham on Wednesday. Needham rising senior Sam Miller (16:00) placed third overall, while teammate Kevin Potterton (16:49) placed fifth. The overall winner was Kevin Gray, who did his H.S. running for Walpole back in the day. Natick rising senior Anya Price (18:39) won the women's race outright, while Needham's Emily Lipman (19:48) was second.

Of special interest to me, my old H.S. teammate John Bonsignore ran 19:00 to finish 5th in the 40-49 age group (John is 49).

It was also good to see that Natick coach Dennis Driscoll finished in 22:21 and Brookline XC and track coach Mike Glennon finished in 25:19.

Wallace=beast, and that's a great race for Doug. I saw on coolrunning there was a ridiculously stacked 2 mile road race that had a winning time of 8:50.

Missed you there, Coach Glennon told me you were scared of getting outkicked by me :).

If you are Anya Price, then hell yeah, I'm scared of getting outkicked by you...

Noah, want to race the Norwood Flyer on July 29th? I think NSRP should have a team presence there...

hahaha ouch. It's Sam Miller. Maybe the smiley face was a little much. But as I'm sure you've already realized, Coach Glennon was kidding.

Hi Sam, thanks for both comments. First of all nice race yesterday! It looks like you outkicked my buddy Bob Collins, or more likely just ran away from him early. Nice job!

Second, don't ever listen to people who say you don't have a kick. Finishing strongly isn't always about raw speed, it's about having strength enough to use your speed at the right time. As you get stronger and more confident, your kick will improve, especially when you know exactly when to change gears. Also, having a kick is very much affected by your confidence. Believe in your kick and it will amaze you!
