Arsenault Wins LJ at Dartmouth Relays

The top two indoor track & field athletes in Massachusetts were in New Hampshire Saturday, competing in the high school division at the Dartmouth Relays. BC High's Corey Thomas had a great day, winning the 55 hurdles (7.51) and high jump (6-8). Newton North's Sam Arsenault just about matched that, winning the long jump (22-1), finishing second in the high jump (6-6), and placing 5th in the hurdles (7.79 - a NN Indoor record!).

Both Thomas and Arsenault earned 20 points, meaning that their one-man teams finished tied for 8th, and ahead of 45 of the 56 teams competing at the meet.

Arsenault's leap in the long jump is also the top Mass. H.S. performance of the season, so far.

Arsenault posted a 7.79 Pr in the 55 hurdles, breaking the Newton North Indoor record!

Thanks for the correction! I've corrected Sam's time in the original post and noted that it's a NN record. With Tony Chen's 8.05, what a great day for NN hurdling!

A little update on the hurdle record . . . the indoor hurdles and the 600m are two records where we have "intrinsically" faster marks from the yards era.

Peter Bourland ran 6.48 for the 50 yard hurdle race in 1986, placing 2nd in the state. You can't simply take 6.48 and multiply by 55m/50y (7.79) because that would be penalizing Bourland for the start, as 50y to 55m (essentially 60y) is the fastest part of the race. I had 7.79 in there as a place holder.

I discussed this with Dave Johnson, who created most of the TF&N conversions. He said to add the typical 0.9 that you would for 50y to 55m (which is what we do for the flat sprint race), and then tack on 0.3 for the additional hurdle. This gives Bourland a 7.68.

Sam's 7.79 is still the record, because that is fastest time over the actual 55m distance. However, a Top 10 list would note Bourland's converted time in front of it.

Hey Josh, I have Bourland for having run 7.6 for the 55 meter hurdles. I think it was run at the Eastern's at Princeton in 86. So Sam's FAT 7.79 is better.
